William Rehnquist, chief justice of the US Supreme Court, revealed on Monday that he had thyroid cancer and underwent a tracheotomy over the weekend, increasing speculation that the winner of the presidential election on November 2 might have a Supreme Court vacancy to fill soon after taking office.
