Their general premise is that Social Security isn't broken, so there's no reason for junior to try to fix it, and they maybe right about Social Security's condition, but who's gonna believe 'em?
For years now, the left and the right have been playing the game of "Who should fix the ailing Social Security", and the dems have really been over playing it, 'cause they saw it as a winning issue. It wasn't, 'cause they never told you how they were gonna fix it, so the republican told you how the dems would fix it (raise taxes).
...but that's besides the point. What matters is that the general consensus was that Social Security needed fixing.
So now the big, think tank idea for the dems (and by "think tank" I mean Atrios) is that there is nothing to worry about, that Social Security is just fine.

Social Security is a mess. I don't know how to fix it, but I know it's broke.
What the dems should be talking about, is how junior is going to destroy it.
10,000 is a marker for the stock market. When it goes too much over 10,000 it's inflated, and there needs to be an "adjustment". Which means a whole lotta people are about to lose their ass.
During the Clinton years, the tech companies needed to be "adjusted", because they didn't make any profit. Profit is important to the stock market. If you scroll down a bit, you'll see where Wal-Mart isn't making as much profit as they thought they were. No doubt that there stock will "adjust".
So let's say that you own stock. Today's stock market is floating around 10,000, so if your stock (in general) goes up, you should probably sell it, and let's say that junior dumps a bunch of Social Security money into the stock market, and let's say that your stock doubles in value. You'd sell it wouldn't you? And you'd make a lot of money doing so. And the poor sap who bought the stock with his Social Security money would lose his ass.
And that's called "one hell of an adjustment".

Outside of one well-publicized (and quickly squelched) attempt in Belgium, no one has tried to formally indict Bush. But both Oxfam International and the U.S. group Human Rights Watch have warned that some of the actions undertaken by the U.S. and its allies, particularly in Iraq, may fall under the war crime rubric.
The case for the prosecution looks quite promising. First, there is the fact of the Iraq war itself. After 1945, Allied tribunals in Nuremberg and Tokyo — in an astonishing precedent — ruled that states no longer had the unfettered right to invade other countries and that leaders who started such conflicts could be tried for waging illegal war.
Concurrently, the new United Nations outlawed all aggressive wars except those authorized by its Security Council.
Today, a strong case could be made that Bush violated the Nuremberg principles by invading Iraq. Indeed, U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan has already labelled that war illegal in terms of the U.N. Charter.
Second, there is the manner in which the U.S. conducted this war.
The mistreatment of prisoners at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison is a clear contravention of the Geneva Accord. The U.S. is also deporting selected prisoners to camps outside of Iraq (another contravention). U.S. press reports also talk of shadowy prisons in Jordan run by the CIA, where suspects are routinely tortured. And the estimated civilian death toll of 100,000 may well contravene the Geneva Accords prohibition against the use of excessive force.

But Wal-Mart revised its estimates down on Saturday evening after disappointing sales on “Black Friday”, the day after Thanksgiving so called because it is traditionally the time retailers move into profit for the year. It is an indicator of spending for the holiday season, when a quarter of annual retail sales are rung up.
Wal-Mart said sales had fallen “below plan” in the last week of November and sales growth was down on the 2.8 per cent annual rate it had reported for October.

Last week her eyes glistened with tears as she walked again with the help of a walking frame at a press conference where South Korea researchers went public for the first time with the results of their stem-cell therapy.

"I believe we are closer now to a pandemic than at any time in recent years," said Shigeru Omi, regional director for the Western Region of the World Health Organization (WHO).
"No country will be spared once it becomes a pandemic," he told a news conference.
"History has taught us that influenza pandemics occur on a regular cycle, with one appearing every 20 to 30 years. On this basis, the next one is overdue," he said at a conference of 13 Asian health ministers trying to figure out how to avoid one.

"If you go back and you look at the sources of the blow-up of Argentine debt during the 1990s, one little-appreciated thing is that social security privatization was a important source of that expansion of debt," said Krugman.
In 2001, Argentina finally defaulted on an estimated $100 billion in debt, the largest such event in modern economic history.

Washington Post reports the acute malnutrition rate among young children in Iraq has nearly doubled since the US invaded the country 20 months ago. An estimated 400,000 children now suffer from the condition known as "wasting" which is characterized by chronic diarrhea and dangerous deficiencies of protein. The country now has malnutrition rates higher than Uganda and Haiti.
Congress Moves To Further Restrict Access to Abortions
In news from Capitol Hill, Congress approved a massive $388 billion spending bill on Saturday. While the bill curtailed federal spending in most non-defense areas it also included provisions that may restrict the right of women to obtain abortions and the number of students who can receive college aid. The bill includes a provision that will make it easier for health care providers and insurance companies to refuse to provide abortions or offer abortion counseling. House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California described the amendment as "essentially a domestic gag rule" that will restrict access to abortion counseling, referral and information. Pelosi criticized the amendment which she said will essentially allow hospitals and health care companies to ignore Roe v Wade.

Ozzie Osbourne, 55, who fought off one of the burglar, said he acted "on instinct" to protect his wife Sharon's jewelry which he said had "enormous" sentimental value.

In part, this theory is an evolution of the belief that "a corporation has the responsibility to do everything within it's power to ensure a profit for it's shareholders". In Neoconservativism it is America's responsibility to ensure a political climate in which American businesses can be profitable.
Examples of Neoconservativism in practice include:
-NAFTA
-Free Trade With China
-War
-The Invasion of Iraq
-Arms Proliferation
-Amnesty for Illegal Aliens
-Work visa's for Mexican immigrants
-Tort reform
-Outlawing Personal Bankruptcy

Although many of the above stated examples of neoconservativism appear to fit into the conservative agenda, they are infact an abomination, and in stark contrast to more traditional conservatist views.
For Example: Traditional conservativism dictates a "hands-off" approach with regards to the internal workings of foreign governments. Neoconservativism, in practice, advocates the use of war, bribery, sanctions, and ostrization when dealing with foreign governments that are opposed to accepting a monetary system based on purist capitalism.
Traditional conservativism also dictates that America's government should only be as large as necessary, should take a "hands-off" approach to the everyday lives of it's citizens, and should be submissive to the values and beliefs of it's citizens. To the contrary, Neoconservativism advocates that the American government should promote American businesses internally, while limiting it's citizens ability to object to the practices of said businesses.
Simply put, Neoconservativism is the belief that nothing should stand in the way of an American companies ability to make a profit...
...not even America.

Although many of the above stated examples of neoconservativism appear to fit into the conservative agenda, they are infact an abomination, and in stark contrast to more traditional conservatist views.
For Example: Traditional conservativism dictates a "hands-off" approach with regards to the internal workings of foreign governments. Neoconservativism, in practice, advocates the use of war, bribery, sanctions, and ostrization when dealing with foreign governments that are opposed to accepting a monetary system based on purist capitalism.
Traditional conservativism also dictates that America's government should only be as large as necessary, should take a "hands-off" approach to the everyday lives of it's citizens, and should be submissive to the values and beliefs of it's citizens. To the contrary, Neoconservativism advocates that the American government should promote American businesses internally, while limiting it's citizens ability to object to the practices of said businesses.
Simply put, Neoconservativism is the belief that nothing should stand in the way of an American companies ability to make a profit...
...not even America.

"We don't have information to indicate that the drug caused the event," Steven Galson, acting director of the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said at a news conference.
Galson noted that such complications also can occur in women who have had surgical abortions or given birth.
Critics had accused Galson of bowing to political pressure earlier this year when he went against an FDA advisory committee's recommendation and refused to make emergency contraception - which prevents pregnancy after unprotected sex - available over the counter. Galson, who had defended that decision, said the move to strengthen warnings on the abortion pill also was science-based.
"There was absolutely no political pressure on this," he said.

The Army has encountered resistance from more than 2,000 former soldiers it has ordered back to military work, complicating its efforts to fill gaps in the regular troops.
Many of these former soldiers - some of whom say they have not trained, held a gun, worn a uniform or even gone for a jog in years - object to being sent to Iraq and Afghanistan now, after they thought they were through with life on active duty.
They are seeking exemptions, filing court cases or simply failing to report for duty, moves that will be watched closely by approximately 110,000 other members of the Individual Ready Reserve, a corps of soldiers who are no longer on active duty but still are eligible for call-up.
In the last few months, the Army has sent notices to more than 4,000 former soldiers informing them that they must return to active duty, but more than 1,800 of them have already requested exemptions or delays, many of which are still being considered.
And, of about 2,500 who were due to arrive on military bases for refresher training by Nov. 7, 733 had not shown up.

An American researcher claimed Sunday to have discovered the remains of the legendary lost city of Atlantis on the bottom of the east Mediterranean Sea. But Cyprus' chief government archaeologist was skeptical.
Robert Sarmast said sonar scanning of the seabed between east Cyprus and Syria revealed man-made walls, one as long as 3 kilometers (2 miles), and trenches at a depth of 1,500 meters (1,640 yards).
"It is a miracle we found these walls as their location, and lengths match exactly the description of the acropolis of Atlantis provided by Plato in his writings," Sarmast said, referring to the ancient Greek philosopher.

The most noteworthy problem has been the permanent loss of 4,532 early ballots in coastal Carteret County. A machine used to store electronic ballots ran out of storage space and county officials mistakenly continued to try to save ballots to it.
The manufacturer, UniLect Corp. of California, erroneously told elections officials that the early voting unit's storage capacity was 10,500 votes.
Instead, only 3,005 ballots out of 7,537 were saved. State elections officials have said that the glitch could result in a new statewide election for races that end with a margin smaller than the 4,532 votes that were lost.

One, from the University of Pennsylvania, reminds us that exit polls are used as 'audits' on the elections in places like Germany and Mexico, and suggests the actual statistical odds that the exit polling was that wrong in the battleground states were 250,000,000 to one.
The other, from a voting project managed by CalTech and MIT, says that while the incorrectness of national exit polling can't be explained by the proverbial 'margin of error,' on a state-by-state basis, it actually was within that margin.

Federal judges are jeopardizing national security by issuing rulings contradictory to President Bush's decisions on America's obligations under international treaties and agreements, Attorney General John Ashcroft said Friday.
In his first remarks since his resignation was announced Tuesday, Ashcroft forcefully denounced what he called "a profoundly disturbing trend" among some judges to interfere in the president's constitutional authority to make decisions during war.
"The danger I see here is that intrusive judicial oversight and second-guessing of presidential determinations in these critical areas can put at risk the very security of our nation in a time of war," Ashcroft said in a speech to the Federalist Society, a conservative lawyers group.

...and as I watched last night I was amazed by Dan's ability to conduct himself as a professional. Basing his career on tabloid obsession of a few hundred thousand people, Dan must have known that this could very well be his last show, and yet Dan bravely soldiered on, even when forced to speak over the loud "flushing" sound in the background.

Director Michael Moore is planning a sequel to "Fahrenheit 9/11," his polemic against the Bush administration, to be released about the time of the next presidential campaign, a spokeswoman for his distributor says.
The sequel, dubbed "Fahrenheit 9/11 and 1/2," will revisit the same issues as Moore's earlier documentary, which he repeatedly said was aimed at swaying the outcome of the presidential race against President Bush.
"We want to get the cameras rolling now and have it ready in two (to) three years," Moore told Daily Variety columnist Army Archerd. "Fifty-one percent of the American people lacked information (in this election), and we want to educate and enlighten them. They weren't told the truth."

The company has been e-mailing its customers in those nine states that they can switch to high-speed broadband service offered by BellSouth Corp. for a special promotional rate.

A CIA analyst who wrote a book that criticized the U.S. war on terror has resigned from the spy agency after it effectively banned him from publicly discussing his views, his publicist said on Thursday.
Michael Scheuer, whose book "Imperial Hubris: Why the West Is Losing the War on Terror" was signed as "anonymous" and published this summer, will resign effective Friday after 22 years at the Central Intelligence Agency.
In a statement, Scheuer said the CIA had not forced him to resign, "but I have concluded that there has not been adequate national debate over the nature of the threat posed by Osama bin Laden and the forces he leads and inspires, and the nature and dimensions of intelligence reform needed to address that threat."
He intends to speak to the media over the next several weeks, including an appearance on the CBS show "60 Minutes" on Sunday.

US oil service firm Halliburton has acknowledged that improper payments "may have been made" to Nigerian officials through a consortium of which it was a member.
In a document dated Friday and filed with the US Securities and Exchange Commission, Halliburton said the US Justice Department had expanded its investigation into potential bribes through the TSKJ consortium, a matter also under review in France and Nigeria.

I took yesterday off for business (it was a great day too!), but today I still have to go looking for a second job...
A couple of factories in my area are closing down, so that will make finding a second job a lot harder for me. The hardest part is that even after a decade of doing this and that, I still don't have any real experience to speak of. I pick up the paper, and every job in it wants a 2 or 4 year degree and at least 2 years experience.
I've never quite figured out how a person goes about getting experience before they get a job.

Star Trek fans may be happy to hear that the Air Force has paid to study psychic teleportation.
But scientists aren't so thrilled.

In the report, author Eric Davis says psychic teleportation, moving yourself from location to location through mind powers, is "quite real and can be controlled."

Davis, a physicist with Warp Drive Metrics of Las Vegas, couldn't be reached for comment. The Air Force paid $25,000 for the report, part of a $20.5 million advanced rocket and missile design contract. The report calls for $7.5 million to conduct psychic teleportation experiments.

l Gore, the former US vice-president, is to put his expertise in global sustainability issues into practice with the launch today of a fund management firm.
Mr Gore has teamed up with David Blood, former chief executive of Goldman Sachs Asset Management, to set up Generation Investment Management, a London-based boutique that will invest in global equities.
So basically it's a fund for environmentally friendly companies.

Dean to head DNC?

I hadn't given much thought to who should replace McAuliffe, and Dean would really bring life to the party. Not a bad idea at all. Al Gore would be a really good choice too, and I think Gore would really shine as the head of the DNC. Now that he's shaken off his Clintonian handlers he's really come to life.
...but then, I think they should both be running for president too.
Democrats say the party's needs a new aggressive spokesman to replace DNC Chairman Terry McAuliffe. One name that has been popping up in the past week, some Democrats say, has been that of former presidential candidate Howard Dean.
Mr. Dean's candidacy imploded just before the first winter primaries began, but he was the first to challenge his party leadership on the war in Iraq and put together a grass-roots campaign that ignited the anti-war movement that eventually turned to Mr. Kerry when his own campaign failed.
"Howard Dean's name has come up in several conversations. He would be terrific as the DNC chairman. He would be a passionate spokesman for the Democrats, but also would be able to continue to revitalize participatory politics that is needed to grow the party," said Mr. Grossman, who was the national chairman of the Dean campaign.
Mr. Dean, the former governor of Vermont and the former chairman of the National Governors Association, is now running his own grass-roots organization, called Democracy for America, which helped more than 100 candidates this year and some think could become the vehicle for a second presidential bid in 2008.
Asked if Mr. Dean is interested in the DNC chairmanship or has plans to run for president again, his communications director Laura Gross, said, "Every option is on the table, but this is really too soon to be talking about anything."
"We have over 700,000 people who are part of our Internet community. Our phones are ringing off the hook. We've raised about $5 million in the past six months. People want to stay involved," she said.

Iraq - Insurgents attacked police stations, gunned down government officials and set off bombs Sunday in central Iraq, leaving more than 50 people dead and more than 60 injured over two days in a dramatic escalation of violence as U.S. forces prepare to storm rebel-held Fallujah.
The wave of violence sweeping the troubled Sunni Triangle north and west of Baghdad may be aimed at relieving pressure on Fallujah, where about 10,000 American troops are massing for a major assault if Prime Minister Ayad Allawi gives the order.
So are they stepping up the voilence to protect Fallujah, or are they only braver because the soldiers, that used to keep them in line, are now stationed outside Fallujah?
Just where did the 10,000 American troops come from?

In a leaked memo, the casting company providing actors was told to ensure they were all were small fry.
The importance of having no fat people was even outlined in capital letters.
It read: “Because this is McDonald’s, it is important that all artists submitted to us are NOT FAT OR OVERWEIGHT in any way.”

The memo also outlines other characters in the ad, emphasizing that each one “MUST NOT BE FAT”.

The call for Bipartisanship must be ignored.
Now listen. There's been a lot of talk about democrats needing to reach across the aisle, and work with the republicans to shape the nations agenda. Bipartisanship has become popular again, and even junior is vowing to reach out to people who share his beliefs. (don't strain yourself, chief)
But it's a trick, a fool's errand.
Let's say that a democrat agrees to help draft legislation X. It instantly becomes a hailed bipartisan effort. A shining example of left and right working together for the common good...
...and then Tom Delay gets his hands on it, and it is instantly stripped of anything the democrat wanted, and on top of that, riders are attached for things that no democrat would ever agree to.
And then it comes up to a vote, and all the democrats try to vote it down. Whether they succeed or not, is not important. It turns into "just another example of the extreme left in action", and some "outraged" mouthpiece for the RNC will go on Crossfire, Hardball and half of the Fox News line up, to tell people just how outraged they are.
They'll tell anyone who'll listen, how once again the evil liberals shot down a bipartisan effort just because they want to hold up the president's agenda.
...and no one in our failed media will call them on it, and once again, liberals will be labeled "out of touch with America".
Republicans are not someone liberals can reach out to. Politics is a war, and you don't reach out to the enemy during a war.
